DIY No.2 – Stone Care Tips and Tricks – How to Remove Scratches

If you are reading this, you probably have marble in your home or office space. Also, you likely realize that marble gets scratched.  This is one of the most common problems, other than staining, that marble restoration professionals resolve.

The solution typically involves wet grinding the marble with consecutively smoother and finer diamond pads until the scratch has been removed. Then the area is either polished or honed to match the existing finish.

How would you do this yourself?

One option is to purchase each product and tooling to complete the process. However, this will become very expensive and we do not suggest this route.

There are simple methods that can be done depending on the finish of your marble.

  • If you have hairline, fine almost cobweb-like, scratches that cause the shine to be reduced on polished marble, you can remove these with the use of super fine steel wool and it should not damage the marble in any way. Remember, it is always good to do a test in an inconspicuous area before attempting this.
  • If you have similar scratches on your honed marble surface, you can try fine sandpaper with water to restore the surface. Be very careful to not go too fine because there is the potential that you will increase the amount of shine. Sandpaper that is too rough will have the opposite effect, and cause the marble to become more scratched.  Again, always do a test in an inconspicuous area first.

Many scratches that do occur in marble are too deep to remove yourself, and recognizing this quickly will save a lot of time and effort. At this point, a marble restoration professional will be able to take over.
